Our laundry room is quite small, with no windows, six white overhead cupboards, white 8" ceramic tile floors and a laundry sink. It is decorated with a favourite cross-stitch series that I stitched many years ago.
Cross-stitch may not be a popular choice for decor but these are special to me. I think it is important to surround yourself with things you love.
My washboard collection (is 3 considered a collection?) adds some of my favourite elements ~wood, metal and vintage glass~ to this room.
The vintage Canadian graphics on the boards really appeal to me. Worn and weathered.
Two still have their original glass (the smaller one is well used and I found the larger one in new condition at an old hardware store.)
The third washboard has a metal face. {Blurry photo alert: I have trouble sometimes with my glasses/vision and my viewfinder.)
We added a large rod for hanging shirts right out of the dryer, and as a place to hang wet items (there is actually more clearance between the wall/washboards and hanging clothes than it appears.)
I would love to have a small shelf between the cabinets and the mess of electrical and vent. We have more than enough storage, so the shelf would simply be for display. I would also love to change out the plastic laundry tub for a stainless sink and new faucet at some point too. Our laundry room is simple and on the small side, but certainly functional. Laundry is very much a shared chore between hubby and I and our favourite part is only having to take a few steps to put clean laundry away in the bedrooms. Do you think a shelf would work in that tricky spot?

What a great space to get the job done! Your cross-stitch is so sweet. I agree, you need to surround yourself with the things that mean something to you! I do think a shelf the length of the room would look good and offer you more display space for collectibles...

I think there is plenty of room for a shelf. Those cross-stitches are so sweet. I have thing like that...perhaps not the most popular at the moment but really meaningful to me. Love those washboards. The metal would be cool as a magnet board too if you made some great larger magnets to hold notes or pictures or whatever.

I think the cross stitch is adorable. And I love, love, love the washboards. I have one hanging in my daughter's room.
Here's a little history on wash boards ....before WWII they were metal, after the war got started...they needed all the metal for weapons...so glass was then used in the wash boards....when I see them...I can tell if it was made before the war or during by what it's made of...pretty cool, I thought...enjoy!

I wish my laundry room was upstairs with my bedrooms like yours. I have to walk downstairs with hampers and wind through to the back of the kitchen to reach mine. Yuck! also, my laundry room is VERY small. it feels more like a closet. I'll never post mine because there isn't anything pretty to see. It's purely functinal (at best). ha! You're lucky to have room to display pretty things in yours. It must help making doing laundry more pleasant. I like how you used your cross stitch in a grouping. that makes it look more like a collection. The washboards are a fun addition too.

I love having our laundry on the 2nd fl.! Ours is in a large closet in our bathroom - which I love! How lucky are you to have a separate space! I think a shelf would be perfect, you could even put a skirt, fabric or a wood panel to hide the electrical and vent! I also love your washboard collection - and yes, 3 is a collection!

I think it is important for us to decorate with what we love, I love Norman Rockwell prints and I use them. They aren't in style, but I don't mind, I like them. Your cross stitches are beautiful and I love the scrub boards, I used to have one, wish I had not gotten rid of it.
I think a small shelf there between your cupboards and machines would be perfect. You could add something to cover up the dryer vent and the chord. You could just drape something there or something else. It will give you the chance to hide them at least.
You are very fortunate to have a nice laundry room, mine is nothing to look at, trust me. It's in a dark basement room with the furnace. That is a project for the future.

Hi Elizabeth, I don't have cupboards above my washer and dryer but I do have unsightly water lines and plugs. I made a shelf and from the front I hinged a piece of plywood that hangs down and covers the mess. That way it can be lifted up out of the way if you need to shut off the taps or unplug the machines. I never did blog about it, but can send you a photo if you like.
The meaningful things are the most authentic and most beautiful! :)

I love your framed cross-stitch! It's wonderful and classic - and, like wonderful classic clothes, should never go "out of style"! I agree with surrounding yourself with things that you love and make you happy...that's what I do!
